How we work

We are advisors to family businesses. Working with us is having a consultant, coach, mentor and teacher to partner with you in achieving your goals- for you, your family, and your business.

Whether you are a first-generation founder or a third-generation CEO, our goal is to help your family prosper as a business family.

We start with the end in mind to understand what you and your family ultimately want.

We also start most engagements with a “discovery phase” assessing the individual, family and business dynamics to clarify the current situation, identify strengths, and articulate goals of the family and individual family members.

Because the need of each family are unique we importantly tailor our engagement to the specific needs of each situation.

It’s never too early

It cannot be too early to begin a succession planning process. One problem is that most entrepreneurs have never gone through a successful planning process before. You have been successful in what you do; planning your exit, however, of a family business you are still growing, may seem premature.

Succession planning has two equally important parts:

  • The preparation of agreements and documents for the transfer of the operating and ownership agreement
  • All of the tasks of raising children to become responsible and independent adults who can take over leadership of the business and the family.

Family businesses are multi-disciplinary

Because of their complexity, support of family businesses benefits from specialized yet orchestrated expertise in areas of:

  • Estate planning
  • Fiscal management
  • Business valuation
  • Pension planning
  • Entrepreneurial/small business growth
  • Organizational development
  • Family therapy

We work with experts in these fields – either your own or qualified professionals we know.

Wherever you and your company are in the family business succession planning process, we will help you develop processes for success that match your needs, working with you and your advisors.

“Succession planning is a process rather than an event… it begins at the outset and continues throughout the duration of the family business.”
